Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid

This qualification provides theoretical and practical training in First Aid techniques that are specific to infants aged 0-1year olds, and children aged 1 year to the onset of puberty.
Learners will gain relevant skills and knowledge required in responding to paediatric first aid emergencies, and will understand the need for effective communication and documentation of each emergency, in line with the Reporting of Injuries Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (2013) (RIDDOR)
Topics also included are fractures, dislocations, injuries to the head, neck, back, eyes, ears & nose, poisoning, bites or stings, burns or scalds, electric shock, minor injuries and chronic medical conditions. This qualification consists of 2 mandatory units, and is typically delivered over a period of 2 days, with a minimum contact time of 12 hours.

Topics also included are fractures, dislocations, injuries to the head, neck, back, eyes, ears or nose, poisoning, bites or stings, burns or scalds, electric shock, minor injuries and chronic medical conditions.

This qualification consists of two mandatory units and is typically delivered over a period of 2 days with a minimum contact time of 12 hours.

Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid

This qualification provides theoretical and practical training in emergency first aid techniques that are specific to First Aidinfants aged less than 1, and children aged from 1 year old to the onset of puberty. Learners undertaking this qualification will be able to provide support to the paediatric first aider to maintain the welfare of infants and children.

Learners will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, such as a child or an infant who is unresponsive, has an airway obstruction, has breathing difficulties or is suffering from shock or anaphylaxis:

This qualification consists of one mandatory unit and is typically delivered over a period of 1 day with a minimum contact time of 6 hours.
All successful students will be issued with an Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate.

EFAW Emergency First Aid at Work Level 2 Award

This qualification is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within health and social care, industries first-aidand business requiring an Emergency First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982.

The recommended course duration is 1 day and topics covered include: the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency First Aider, assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness and assisting a casualty who is suffering from injury and illness. The qualification is assessed via on-going oral and/or written questioning and practical demonstration.

The minimum contact hours for this qualification, excluding breaks should be for a minimum period of 6 hours over 1 day.

All successful students will be issued with an Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate, along with a wallet-sized plastic card detailing their qualification.

FAW First Aid at Work Level 3

This qualification is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within health and social care, industries FAW First Aid at Workand business requiring a First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982.

The recommended course duration is 3 days and topics covered include: the roles and responsibilities of the First Aider; assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness, assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness, chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis.
The qualification is assessed via on-going oral and/or written questioning and practical demonstration.

All successful students will be issued with a First Aid at Work Certificate, along with a wallet-sized plastic card detailing their qualification.

FAW Level 3 Requalification

  • First Aid at Work Refresher
  • This is a 2 day requalification of the FAW course
  • A current first aid certificate must be held by the individual. Evidence of this will need to be shown to the instructor on the first day of training.
  • Upon successful completion certification is valid for three years

CPR/BLS Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation /Basic Life Support

  • This course covers Basic Life Support skills and includes skills for Adult, Child and Infant as well as healthcare variations on infant CPR.The course includes: Safety, precautions, initial assessment, recovery position, CPR, compression only CPR, CPR handover and choking.This is ideal for nurses, care workers or medical professionals needing annual updates to complete professional membership.We also do a BLS course for Dentist and those working within a dental practice.

Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training

  • This course is aimed at anyone who requires a course in AED use.Learning AED skills is becoming more important with the increase in the numbers of units in the community and workplace.They are easy to use with a little training and make a real difference in the chance of survival to someone in cardiac arrest.

What are they?

Functional Skills are a new set of qualifications aimed at learners aged 14 and above covering practical skills in English, maths and information and communications technology (ICT).

But these new qualifications are not just about ensuring everyone has a sound understanding and knowledge of English, Maths and ICT. They are about knowing when and how to use the knowledge in real life situations, and designed to help students build the practical skills to get the most out of work, education and everyday life.

What’s involved?

While you can take these as separate qualifications, here at ACTS we embed these into all of our courses as we feel they form an essential part of ensuring our students can carry out the role they are training for.

How are they assessed?

You will be assessed mainly by completing a set of practical tasks within a given time limit.

The awarding bodies that are developing Functional Skills are also looking at new ways to assess learners, such as electronic and online methods.

ACTS is able to offer courses for trainers and teachers through the increasingly valuable Award in Education and Training [AET] course.

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training [AET] is an introduction to teaching thatEducation and Training will give an insight into the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training.

The Award is for candidates already working in the area of education and training who would like to gain an official qualification and for candidates new to the Lifelong Learning Sector.

In January 2011, the old NVQ’s were replaced with new Diplomas under the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). These new vocational qualifications work by awarding credit for different qualifications and units of learning, allowing for smaller steps of learning.

Our RQF courses range from levels 1 – 5, and provide Learners with a simpler way to compare and understand qualifications. Learners’ competencies in their knowledge, skills and behaviours are assessed and certified. ACTS’ fully trained and experienced staff will work with their students to ensure they are getting the right mix for their own career plans, sharing their invaluable experience and passion along the way.

ACTS can provide the training and assessment for the following courses, designed for those working with individuals, providing support and assistance with their physical and/or emotional care.:

Level 1 Certificate – Introduction to Health and Social Care

These nationally recognised qualifications are designed to enable learners to gain an insight into the key responsibilities and activities involved in working in the care sector. They are designed for people who are working or want to work in health or social care and want to build their skills and knowledge to help them gain employment or advance in their career.

These introductory qualifications cover areas such as caring for specific health needs, communication, job opportunities in the sector and promoting healthy habits in care.

Possible units include:

  • Health needs
  • Communication with adults and children in health and social care
  • Job opportunities in health and social care
  • Promote healthy eating in care
  • Learning from work placement.

Each unit is typically worth 2-4 credits and learners must achieve at least 13 credits for the Level 1 Certificate.

Assessment will be based on a portfolio of evidence you’ll build over the course of the qualification. This portfolio will typically contain assignments, case studies, projects, observations and expert witness testimony.

» Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care

Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care

These nationally recognised qualifications are made up of several mandatory units with a range of optional and/or specific pathway units including Dementia, Learning Disability or Adults. The units can be specifically tailored to provide the best possible training for a particular job role and will assess the student’s skills, competence and knowledge in each area.

Each unit within the Diploma has both a credit rating and a level and learners must achieve at least 46 credits for the Level 2 Diploma.

Assessment will be done based on observation and evaluation of work-based performance, questioning and witness testimony. Students will also be expected to produce a portfolio of evidence to prove their competency in each of the assessed areas.

» Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care

Level 3 and 4 Assessing and Assuring Quality

These new qualifications are designed to meet the emerging needs of the developing qualification frameworks.

Who are they for?

These qualifications are appropriate for all staff assessing and quality-assuring qualifications in the QCF, including staff assessing on non-NVQ or non-competence-based qualifications, ensuring that they meet agreed standards of assessment.

As well as being a requirement if you wish to assess or verify QCF and other qualifications confirming occupational competence, these qualifications will be valuable to any staff involved in or responsible for assessing and quality-assuring all vocational and vocationally related achievement.

What’s involved?

There are qualifications assesors and for internal and external quality assurance and they contain knowledge units for each assessor and quality assurance role, which are available as one-unit Awards.

The Level 3 qualifications cover:

  • Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
  • Assessing competence in the work environment
  • Assessing vocationally related achievement

The Level 4 qualifications cover:

  • Understanding quality assurance of assessment processes and practice
  • Quality assurance of assessment processes and practice
  • Leading quality assurance of assessment processes and practice.

Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young People’s Workforce

Developed in association with Skills for Care and Development, the Sector Skills Council for the Children and Young People’s Workforce this qualification is to guide and assess development of knowledge and skills relating to Early Learning and Childcare, Social Care and the Learning Development and Support Services workforces.

The course is made up of a range of several mandatory units and several optional and learners must achieve at least 65 credits.

Assessment will be done based on a work based observation and a portfolio of evidence to prove their competency in each of the assessed areas.

Level 5 Diploma: Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care or;

Assessing and Quality Assuring

Our Leadership & Management Programme is designed for staff in management roles, looking to achieve Level 5 Diploma in Health & social care & Children and Young people’s Services.

How does it work?

At Level 5 there are several mandatory units and then learners can choose from one of six pathways depending on whether they want to specialise in Adult Care or Children and Young People’s Services. Pathways available include:

• Children and Young People’s Residential
• Children and Young People’s Management
• Children and Young People’s Advanced Practice
• Adults’ Residential Management
• Adults’ Management
• Adults’ Advanced Practice

Working in a similar way to Levels 2 and 3, each unit has a credit rating and learners must achieve 80 credits or more to achieve the Diploma. Moving from practitioner to management is a big step and will require a whole new set of skills with modules covering things such as conflict resolution, setting up management systems and motivating your team.

Assessment will be done based on observation and evaluation of work-based performance, questioning and witness testimony. Students will also be expected to produce a portfolio of evidence to prove their competency in each of the assessed areas.

How long will it take?

This is an on-going vocational course and learners can complete units at their own pace. You can take up to 3 years to complete the course but at ACTS we find most of our students complete with 12-18 months.

What’s the next step?

The Level 5 Diploma demonstrates a high level of learning and competence as well as professional development. Those who complete the course often go on to find employment at management level in roles such as Residential Care Home Manager, Day Service Manager, Community Based Services Manager and many more.

ACTS Training Centre is your 1st stop to accessing high quality training and development for your staff members. Our training team is made up of occupationally competent trainers who have a wealth of experience in training, assessing, quality assurance and the provision of up to date sector specific staff development information. Our Intermediate Adult Care Apprenticeship Programme is accredited by Government Approved Awarding Organisation.

In our organisation, working with Employers in partnership, to carry out a training and development needs analysis of the apprentices, in order to identify their specific training needs. Therefore our training and delivery is “Person Specific”, bespoke and targeted to the individual apprentice. This puts us a head above all other training providers, because we directly impact positively on the achievement of successful outcomes, which reflects on the employers’ service provision quality standards. Furthermore, we will provide Continuous Professional Development (CPD) support, in order for apprentices to maintain their occupational competencies, which ensures that service standards within are maintained, meeting both service users’ needs and all relevant legislation, regulation and organisational requirements too.

Compassion, Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes & Behaviours are key in any caring environment. To be the best provider of Health & Social Care Services and to make a positive difference in the lives of service users, apprentices need to be adequately trained and supported, to gain relevant skills, knowledge & competencies.

Apprentices on ACTS Training Programme Gain The Following:

• On the job work experience.
• Skills, knowledge & understanding on the rights of others, including how to treat people with necessary dignity and respect.
• Skills, knowledge and behaviours required for the provision high quality service and values.
• Skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for effective communication.
• Skills, knowledge and ability to implement a safe, healthy and secure home environment for each Service User; working in line with legal and organisational Health & Safety requirements and the Safeguarding Regulation.
• Skills and knowledge required in maintaining a current CPD.
• Where required, Functional skills – level 1 & or 2.
On completion of your Apprenticeship Programme, you will be able to carry out tasks in their work role demonstrating skills, knowledge & behaviours necessary in meeting the needs of each individual service user, while maintaining high quality standards in line with legal, regulatory and organisational requirements.

ACTS APPRENTICESHIP ASSESSMENT PRACTICE

At ACTS, we pride ourselves in the good use of a variety of assessment methods, which provides for fair assessment practice, which enables the good development of confidence in our Apprentices. These include for example: practical work place observations, Questions & Answers, Discussions, Work Products, Reflective Accounts and a variety of relevant developmental activities. Our seasoned Assessors support you to build a portfolio of evidences, needed to evidence competencies and gain certification and qualification. ACTS vibrant Internal Quality Assurance System helps to maintain high quality standards that meet the Government Approved Awarding Organisation standards.

END POINT ASSESSMENT

At end point assessment, each Apprentice will present a portfolio of evidences including: Situational Judgement Test • Professional Discussion • Self-Assessment • Collated testimonies from people who use services.

The Situational Judgement test will have questions based on various scenarios, and based on the results of the test; the Apprentice will progress to the “interview stage”; at this stage they will be interviewed by the Independent End Point Assessor. On successful completion of the End-point assessment interview, the Apprentice is then recommended for certification.

GATEWAY ASSESSMENT

Progression and achievement of the Apprenticeship includes the need for each Apprentice registered on our Programme, to progress to “Gateway” through our holistic assessment programme. Once at “Gateway”, each Apprentice must successfully evidence the following:
• An induction into the Care Certificate (level 2 Learners)
• The achievement of relevant Assessment Criteria (including Knowledge, skills & behaviours) for Level 2 / 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care. Level of Apprenticeship qualification will depend on current work tasks the Apprentice carries out in their work role, and this will be agreed at the initial stage on the programme, following to an initial / needs assessment.
• The achievement of Functional Skills Level 1 / 2 in Maths and English (depending on the Apprenticeship level – Intermediate / Advance; that is Level 2 / 3 respectively).
• Completion of a self-assessment, which will be submitted to the independent “End-point Assessor”.
